Present Day

“Him, I understand.” Jen shoots me a look with eyes so sharp, you wouldn’t know they’d cut you until you saw the blood drip down your arm. “He feels guilty about Casey, even though he shouldn’t. He’s doing this out of some misguided sense of justice. But you? Why are you helping him?”

“He’s my friend, and he needs my help.” It’s not the whole truth, not anymore, but it contains enough. I feel good about it.

“You’re not helping him. You’re enabling him. There’s a big difference. Tell me this isn’t dangerous.”

I stay silent. I won’t lie to her. Hank needs to decide whether he tells her the entire story, but I’m not lying. I guess I inherited that trait from my father.

Hank says, “We’re looking for snakes. You have to wade through a snake pit to find them. Have faith. We’ll be fine.”

Jen throws her hands in the air. “I’m through with you. You’re so insanely, incomprehensibly, outrageously stubborn—worse than Casey. Do what you want, but I’m not going to your funeral.”

Hank slumps his shoulders and engulfs his rather large head with his even larger hands.

When it’s clear he’s not going to say anything else, I say, “We should go. It’s getting late.”

Jen stalks from the kitchen, opens her front door for us, and slams it shut after we leave.

As we head to the SUV, I’m walking with a ghost-like version of Hank, who’s silently wrestling with himself. He won’t find any easy answers. Either he tells her everything, or he keeps the secret of the Great Struggle and our place between angels and demons. Both choices suck.

Once we reach the SUV, I remove the pirate’s mobile phone from my pocket and replace the sim card.

“How are you going to crack the password?” Hank asks.

“With one of these.” I remove a small decryption device from another pocket in my Army jacket. I grabbed it out of my duffle at Jen’s place while they were arguing. “It’s a—”

“Decoding flash drive,” Hank says. “I’m in the Order of the Present. I haven’t been living under a rock. We hate technology, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know the technology out there. Hard to hate something if you don’t know what it is.”

He sounds a touch angry, but at least he’s talking.

“Right,” I say. “This one is particularly effective. It shouldn’t have any problem hacking into mobile phones unless they have government-level encryption on them. It also works on most safes and other locks.”

I plug the small device into the phone and let it do its thing.

“I’m not sure I like this plan,” Hank says. “When the pirates show up, people are sure to get hurt.”

“That will be on them. They have free will to act accordingly.” I sound like Lucifer, and add, “Besides, we need an in with Sinclair Berger if we’re going to solve Casey’s case and figure out if he’s behind the food issues. It’s going to cost us 200 grand to crash that high stakes poker match. According to Father Paul, this is a big deal.
